How to commission a flute

After reading this page it should help you with the size and style of the flute which is suitable for you to play.

The most important thing to consider is your hand size, use the Hand Size Guide in the drop down menu from the Home Page to find your hand size first

Once you have your hand size then you will know what size of flute you will be able to play and here is my recommended guide
      - size 7 hand G# and G
      - size 7½ - 8 hand G#, G and F#
      - size 8½ - 9 hand G#, G, F# and F
      - size 9½ - 10 hand G#, G, F#, F, E

Now you need to decide what type of wood the flute will be made from and here is a list of the types of woods I use, Ash, Monterey Pine, Maple, Beech, Silver Birch, Willow, Yew and Walnut, these are a few of the English woods I use and here is a list of the African woods I use, Golden Iroko and Idigbo, I also have a few lengths of American Golden Ash, if you view flutes sold this will give you an idea of how they look when they are finished.

Next is the look of the flute.

Tuning holes or no tuning holes, these are the holes at the end of the flute, normally 2 holes, one on each side but sometimes 4 holes, one on each side, one on top and one on the bottom, these holes tune the flute to its fundamental note (as in flutes sold, Walnut E) or no tuning holes, the flute is finished at its fundamental tuning length (as in flutes sold, Ash E).

Square end or a sloping end (view flutes sold)

Three lengths of Faux Deer lace are plaited to make the strap to hold the bird on to the flute.

With all the above information you should be able to get me to make you a flute which you will cherish and enjoy to play.

Contact me at  (tdw103@live.co.uk)  to discuss any of the above.

The price for a commissioned flute depends on the type of wood used, the size of the flute and the style of the decoration, ranging from £200 to £500, free P&P in the UK mainland and £15 P&P for the rest of the world.

A 25% non-refundable deposit is required up front to cover the cost of materials and time.
